September: Called To Love
------------------------------------------------ Week 1 ------------------------------------------------
Read It: 1 John 4:7-21 (click here for online Bible)
Think On It:
There is a lot of comfort and security in the knowledge that God loves me. He loves me so much that he sent his Son to deal with my sins. Verse 10 says, “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” I am so thankful for this love.
However, I am given a responsibility with this gift. Verse 11 says, “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” This is not just a suggestion, it is a command. Verse 21 states, “And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God, must also love his brother.” This is a calling – I am called to love others.
It is easy to love those who love me. It is much more difficult to love those who rub me the wrong way, who irritate me, who might actually hate me. I don’t have a choice in the matter. I am to love them. How? The Holy Spirit in me is there to help me – to guide me. I cannot love those who oppose me without the help of the Holy Spirit. I cannot do it in my own strength.
Pray about it:
“Dear Father, Thank you for loving me so much to send your Son to bring me into a perfect relationship with you. I understand that with that relationship, I have the responsibility to love others. It is hard, Father. I need your help in doing this. Fill me with your love, so that I can love others. Thank you. Amen”
Act on it:
-
Prayerfully think about your current relationships.
-
Are there any people you need to ask forgiveness of or to forgive?
-
What are your plans for doing so?
-
What are some things you can do to show those around you more love?
Parent Hints:
-
Talk with your child about their friends and peers.
-
Find out about one or two kids they might be having a hard time with in getting along.
-
Talk about ways they can show love toward that child – i.e. pray for them, talk about the good things about that child, have your child role play saying kind words to that child in different scenarios, invite them to join them at recess or sit with them at lunch.
-
Have them memorize verse 1 John 4:19: "We love because He first loved us."
