Stay, but GO!

June 04, 2020
By Tina deVries

I can’t believe that I will have only one more blog after this for the rest of this year. As we wrap up, I think it is ironic that our spiritual theme, ALL IN, ends with the reminder of Jesus’ mandate in Mark 16:15 (NIV):
“Go into all the world
and preach the gospel to all creation ...”

Eleven weeks ago our governor told the citizens of Washington to go home and stay home, unexpectedly ending our school year without warning and turning many things in life upside down. Instead of go, we were told to stay, in an effort to protect ourselves and others from sickness. And stay we have, as we’ve waited in hopes that the spread of this deadly virus would cease or that a cure would soon be found.

As I write, I am reminded that there is a far greater sickness in the world than COVID-19. Recent news is painful evidence of this, as humanity turns to violence in an effort to be heard. This sickness has the ability to take not only mortal life but, more seriously, eternal life. This sickness is sin, life without the redemptive grace of Jesus Christ. It is for this reason, and because we as believers have the cure, that Jesus commands, WE MUST GO.

“Let your life shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
—Matthew 5:16

While in our present circumstances we may be limited in our ability to come and go as we’ve been accustomed to, most of us are still encountering others in a variety of ways: through Facebook, through Instagram, in grocery stores, in some workplaces, and in our homes. We all still have a God-appointed territory. Let us not forget our TRUE Governor, and remember that The Church is still the hope for the world. WE MUST GO! Preach the good news, in word or in deed. The world is in dire need of the cure that we have.

“You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, ‘Here is your God!’ ”
—Isaiah 40:9
