As we take time to break away from the routines of our school calendar and focus on the birth of our Savior, let us consider the statement King Herod made to the wise men over 2,000 years ago. The wise men were looking for “the one who has been born king of the Jews” (Matthew 2:2, NIV), and Herod’s response in verse 8 is this: “Go and search carefully for the child.” In a similar manner, but for different reasons, we need to do the same thing today.
First, and foremost, in order to “find Jesus” we need to “go.” We need to take action, and the type of action needed is not casual in nature. Our searching must be intentional, focused, and even intense at times. We also need to search “carefully.” The wise men did not want to miss the newborn king in their travels, and neither do we. We must also search carefully so that we can be sure we have truly found Jesus as opposed to an imposter, a false gospel. Satan is a great imposter and the father of lies (John 8:44). As we know, both from Scripture (1 Peter 5:8) and our life experiences, Satan is on the prowl doing all he can to deceive us, lead us off course, and devour us with falsehood. That is why it is so important that we go through this Christmas season with an aim to “search carefully for the child.” This looks like having a constant mindset of prayer and engaging in regular Scripture reading to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and His gospel. He is the way, the truth, and the life, born to us in a manger many years ago.
“So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.” —Luke 2:16, NIV
I pray that you all hurry off in search of Jesus today and that you all experience the amazing wonder of His truth and love this Christmas season!
