This past week during Global Week of Student Prayer, students from one of our campuses learned how to communicate with God by using Scripture as a guide. Why would anyone pray Scripture when they can come up with a prayer on their own?
Throughout our day, we can face challenges that pull us in a variety of directions. As a result, we can oftentimes feel either pulled or disconnected from the root system that often has us grounded. When we feel like we have no roots, usually by the time it’s all said and done, our work, study, relationships, and other areas of life end up yielding fruit we did not intend or hope for.
Well, part of the purpose of a plant’s root system is to provide strength and stability. The deeper the roots, the greater the plant can withstand the storms of life. When we pray Scripture, we root ourselves in the truth of God’s Word, which is everlasting and designed to withstand the storms of life. Not only do we feel more grounded when we pray Scripture, but our work, study, and relationships are positively impacted as well. The psalmist says that when we root ourselves in God’s Word, we are like a tree whose root system is nourished by streams of water that cause it to yield fruit in due time (Psalm 1:3).
Throughout the month of October, we will be talking about the importance of what it means for us to be rooted in Scripture! In order for us to grow and flourish to become the people who God has called us to be, we have to have a strong foundation in His Word. Our students will learn about the importance of learning God’s Word through reading, memorizing, and reciting Scripture. They will learn that we can strengthen our roots in God’s Word by not only learning the Bible, but also following its commands and applying it to their lives. Finally, they will hear stories about characters like King Josiah, who helped turn a nation around because he rooted himself in God’s Word.
So the next time you feel uprooted, try using Scripture as a guide for prayer. I believe not only will you feel pulled back into the center of the life God has for you, but you will likely see the fruit you intend to see in all areas of your life.
Blessings to you as we go deeper into His Word together!
