Owls, Pumpkins, and Bats—Oh My!

October 27, 2021
By Puyallup Elementary

This week we are honored to hear from guest writer Debbie Selene, one of our first grade teachers:

It must be fall. My favorite time of the year.

There are so many wonderful things happening in first grade. We have been learning about bats and other nocturnal animals. God has given these animals special abilities to see and hear in the dark.

We were able to learn about the food chain as we dissected owl pellets and discovered what owls eat. Students learned that owls swallow their prey whole and then spit out the fur and bones. The first graders had so much fun digging out the bones from the ball of fur and then comparing the bones they found to a skeleton chart to discover what their owl ate. Don’t be surprised, Mom and Dad, if you find a plastic bag filled with their treasured bones. A big thank you to Mr. Nelson for coming to our class to share his career in biology and for helping us learn more about owls. He has been helping me with my owl pellet lesson for the last 18 years.

We also had a great time learning all about pumpkins. Did you know that pumpkins are the largest fruit? During our Pumpkin-Mania Day, students were involved in everything pumpkin: pumpkin math, pumpkin science, pumpkin art, and even the construction of a pumpkin catapult.

Thank you to the parents who came to help with our Pumpkin-Mania Day and who donated pumpkins.
