Family Feature: CCS McAlder Campus joins the Barta family in making an impact

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” (Philippians 2:4)

Cascade Christian McAlder is a school filled with giving hearts! On many occasions this year students, parents and staff have given back in different ways.

At the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Harrison’s second grade class came together and donated clothes, toiletries, food, kitchen necessities, and toys to a ministry called NewLife Ethiopia (NLE).

NewLife Ethiopia was founded by a Cascade Christian McAlder family. In 2007, Jason and Andrea Barta launched a diligent effort to improve the living conditions of 23 orphans who were living in an extremely poor orphanage in the town of Nazaret, Ethiopia. They opened a care center where they could help the elderly and the fatherless.  Jason, Andrea and the staff in Ethiopia work together with Ethiopian and American churches to help children who are brought to their care center by the government until they can legally be adopted by strong Ethiopian Christian families.

McAlder students and families have supported NLE in other ways as well. Mrs. Barta said, “A student gave my husband a big bag of change for the orphanage, and we used it to buy formula for the babies.” There are also a few families who sponsor children in the orphanage. They pay a small amount each month that goes towards the child’s food, clothing, medications, and education, allowing them to live a happier and healthier life.

The organization also shares the word of God in some of the most difficult areas of Ethiopia in addition to orphan care and adoptions. NLE encourages churches in rural areas, provides training to leadership of the churches, and brings kindergarten education to the children.

NLE has a mission statement: “Offering new life in Christ through evangelism to unreached people and adoption for abandoned children in Ethiopia.” Their Core Values of integrity, relationship, family, stewardship, and commission align well with the values of CCS.

“When we met as a board and discussed what the core values for NewLife Ethiopia would be we knew we needed to look at the life of Christ as the model for our ministry. Our desire is to be Christ-centered in all we do,” stated Andrea.

Andrea and Jason are well known within the McAlder family. Andrea has volunteered for recess duty several times, helped in her children’s classrooms, and she was also the fifth grade support mom this last school year, helping out with class projects, parties, the class Shutterfly account, and whatever else needs to be done. Her husband, Jason, has also helped out in the classrooms, and has talked to the fifth grade class about one of his more recent mission trips to Ethiopia.

Mr. and Mrs. Barta have four children, who all joined the McAlder campus in October of 2017.  Rosalee is 5 years old and in K-Prep, Gabe is 7 years old and in first grade, Olit is 8 years old, and in second grade, and the oldest is Sam. He is 11 years old and fifth grade.

We are so thankful the Barta family chose CCS and became part of our community!
