Rooted in God

August 31, 2022
By Joshua Stines, Director of Spiritual Formation

When looking at a plant that is thriving, beautiful, and even bearing fruit, it is so easy to forget how important its roots are. In fact, roots are often overlooked because they are hardly seen. As it turns out, they are very important because they store up and provide important elements such as nutrients, stability, and strength for plants.

The role roots play in the life of a plant provides an excellent analogy about our life in God. So often, the temptation is for us to put our roots in something other than God–what other people may think, our performance, our jobs, our grades, our appearance, just to name a few.

But if Scripture is a testament to anything, it’s that these things do not provide the important elements needed for us to thrive as God has intended. If we put our roots in other things, instead of thriving when trials or test come our way, we are left unsatisfied, we wither from the heat of life (Matthew 13:6), or we die out from the drought of our difficult circumstances (Jeremiah 17:7-8).

Before we can thrive and flourish by being all that God has created us to be, we have to develop strong roots in God, a process that begins with knowing who He is and what He has done for us.

Throughout the month of September, our students will learn about the Trinity–Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Students will have the opportunity to hear how they can work together to uproot sin in our lives. They will also learn how staying connected to God through prayer, Scripture memorization, and reading His Word will provide them the nutrients, stability, and strength to grow and become the thriving and flourishing people God has created them to be.

They will learn about heroes of the faith, people like Sister Amy and the poor widow (Mark 12:41–44), whose lives were not only firmly rooted in God but an inspiration to others around them to do the same.

Finally, students will be given the opportunity to strengthen their roots in God by gathering alongside students across our district as well as those all over the world to pray for the upcoming school year during Global Week of Student Prayer.

Pray with me this month that students will be so touched by God’s love that they will be compelled to make room for God to take root in their lives!
