A ‘Christ-mas’ Musical

November 29, 2023
By Shayna Lander, PELM Music Teacher

As a music teacher, I have the privilege of influencing children through the performing arts. However, I am not just a music teacher. There is gravity in teaching music because songs influence people greatly. Songs are like glue; they stick. Do you remember the alphabet song from kindergarten? Me, too.

I remember hymns from my childhood that taught biblical truth. Some were songs about the character of God, like “Jesus Loves Me.” Others worship our soon-coming King, like “Open the Eyes of My Heart.” These songs helped me memorize Scripture and remember the character of God. As an adult, I am still uncovering the depth of these songs.

Now more than ever, it is vital that children have sound biblical truth in songs, such as that found in “On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand.” Our songs should encompass the gospel. Our children must know who God is and realize their identity in Christ.

In selecting Puyallup Elementary’s Christmas programs, I wanted to emphasize the truth that we can be a part of God’s family because of Jesus. A Tree Lot Christmas is about a lonely rich man who hears the gospel and accepts Jesus. Straight Outta Bethlehem is about an orphan who gets adopted into God’s family.

While some children will not understand the gravity of what they are singing today, someday they will. When they approach a difficult time, I hope they remember their childhood Christmas musical, and it will lead them closer to Jesus.

Please invite your family and friends to our Christmas musicals on December 5, 2023. A Tree Lot Christmas will start at 6:00 p.m., and Straight Outta Bethlehem will start at 7:20 p.m. Each musical has a strong gospel message and is relevant to all ages.
