Be Still — God is Sovereign

October 30, 2024
By Ken Friesen, EdD Superintendent

Do you ever find yourself starting to pray, and before long you’re drifting into a mode of processing rather than praying? I realize that is somewhat of a rhetorical question, because we are all probably prone to let our minds wander to at least some degree. Distractions or doubts can cause us to drift from praying to processing and analyzing in our own power. This kind of striving in our own minds is just a way we attempt to take back control and solve a challenge on our own instead of trusting God implicitly with the matter.

The focus of our spiritual theme for November is that we can be still in our minds because God is sovereign. Proverbs 16:9 (NIV) says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” We get so caught up in our human planning and sometimes forget God has already established our steps. We can pray in confidence that God knows what we need. Romans 8:28 (NIV) tells us the following: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Because God is in control and completely trustworthy, we can keep our focus on him and on praying rather than processing; We know He is working for our good. God’s goodness and sovereignty are not things we need to wonder about. Those aspects of God are absolute. For that reason, the next time we find ourselves slipping into processing because we have deceived ourselves into believing that we can “think” our way through a challenging situation, let us instead remember to shift back into prayer. Let us acknowledge to God that we trust Him because He is faithful and because we know He is working for our good. The end result will be an incredible sense of peace that only God can provide (Philippians 4:7).

May God richly bless you and your family as you rely on His sovereignty.
